In Nomine: Amaliel, Angel of Plagues

She is the executioner, one of Heaven’s oldest angels and accountable only to God. Is it any wonder that she is feared by all creation, including the forces of Heaven and Hell? After disappearing for centuries, she has been seen again and all ponder what could this mean for humankind.

Oaths

  1. Never suffer an evil to live when it’s my choice.
  2. Never surrender in a fight or allow myself to be captured by the armies of Lucifer.
  3. Never question or hesitate when ordered by the Word of God.
  4. Obey the Seraphim Council unless overruled by the Word of God.
  5. Spare no innocent or angel if they interfere with my orders.

Amaliel was created as the earth was cooling. The young Elohite served with Uriel, rising in the archangel’s ranks. She was there to witness the extinction of the dinosaurs. Rumors amongst the host suggest that the extinction event occurred at the behest of God and carried out by Uriel and Amaliel; a suggestion the angel had neither confirmed nor denied.

Completely loyal to the Archangel of Purity, she was not even approached by Lucifer or his angels for the Rebellion. And, following the example set by Uriel, she transformed into a Malakite to aid in the battle. With the ban lifted on celestial intervention, Amaliel spent much of her time working with Dominic, helping to detect impurities in the angels and would often serve as judge, jury, and executioner for the dissonant.

Amaliel was making a name for herself as Heaven’s Headsman, a paragon of Purity and Judgement. In 1692 B.C. God charged the Malakite with a new task. A tribe of Nephallim had survived and were intermingling and breeding with humans. Amaliel worked with Oannes to flood the area, wiping out almost all life in the region. Despite the massive destruction, the Symphony remained quiet. It was this event and Oannes’s own death in 1627 B.C. that would inspire tales and numerous flood myths to come.

In 1326 B.C. Amaliel was granted the Word of Plagues after working with the prophet, Moses, to bring about the 10 plagues of Egypt. The words of the prophet were the instructions of God and the Malakite suffered no dissonance for the deaths at her hands. The Virtue’s sword was stained with the blood of demons, angels, and humans. For centuries, the Angel of Plagues continued to work with angels and prophets, issuing God’s wrath to those that failed to listen.

Though she was not part of the forces in the Purification Crusade, it was assumed she was also called to the Higher Heavens with Uriel. The Angel of Plagues was no longer seen in Heaven and no Archangel could account for her whereabouts. The rumor was dispelled, however, as she was seen in the battle against Makatiel. His plague was not God’s and was an affront to her Word. After the destruction of the Renegade Demon Prince of Disease, the Angel of Plagues vanished once more.

The word “plague” is tied to epidemics and swarms of pest insects, but her Word is more synonymous with God’s Wrath. The Plagues of the Malakite are ones directly instructed by God or through his prophets. Both of which have been silent for a long time. Heaven and Hell prefer it when Amaliel is away (though no one knows where she goes). Her presence indicates something terrible is about to happen. Many believe the angel will only appear when it is time to pour out the Seven Bowls once Gabriel’s Horn is blown, ushering in the apocalypse and God’s wrath.

Perhaps that’s why rumors of Amaliel’s appearances starting in 2015 are so discomforting. The Angel of Plagues has been detected multiple times in Siberia, Norway, and Alaska; often where the permafrost is starting to melt. Those who have tried to confront the angel usually find themselves in Limbo or waking up next to their Heart. Archangels and Princes alike have told their servitors to watch the Angel of Plagues if they can, but give her a wide berth.
