Vampire: Monique

Not all Toreadors are gothic, moody painters or wealthy patrons. Some who have been embraced into the clan know that quality, clean code is an art unto itself. And they turn that art into augmented reality. Monique is a recently-turned vampire suitable as a character or NPC.

Human Life

Monique Harris was born on June 3rd in 1987 to Nevaeh and Tyler. Raised in a middle-class home, the only child of the Harris household was almost never without a computer or video game console. Neither Nevaeh nor Tyler had a problem with their daughter’s game-playing, so long as she kept up her grades. Nevaeh often encouraged Monique to try to create a game, rather than just play one. And, as a pre-teen, Monique began an informal education as a programmer. One that would eventually lead to a college education and a degree.

It was also while in college that Monique realized she was a lesbian and came out to her parents. Nevaeh embraced her daughter’s choice; Tyler did his best to understand, though his disappointment was obvious. Despite his misgivings, Tyler let his child know that he loved her no matter what.

Following college, Monique got a job in the corporate sector, writing code for a large health care organization. It wasn’t glamorous, but it paid the bills. On her off hours, Monique began her own projects in augmented reality, focusing on smartglasses and smartphones. While she never had a huge hit, her apps did earn her some notoriety and profit.

Amelia Lange and Monique met at the modern art museum while it was hosting an exhibition on computer art. The two hit it off immediately and began dating. Less than two years later, they moved into a condo together. Amelia was a dancer, poet, and painter. She added “muse” to her resumé, inspiring Monique to incorporate art into her augmented reality projects.

Embrace and After

Desmond Carroway was a patron of the arts and always on the lookout for something exploratory and bold from a new artist, one which he could help mold into something great. Monique Harris’s latest smartglasses app turned a view of the world into a living painting by one of four artists: Van Gogh, Monet, Seurat, or Nagel. The idea of marrying technology and art wasn’t completely new, but the style used by Monique and the trueness to the artists piqued Desmond’s interest. He decided she would be his next investment. Along with being a sponsor, Desmond Carroway was also a vampire.

On March 27th of 2018 Monique Harris died and was reborn a vampire. She moved cities and adopted a new surname of Lange (after her lover). Desmond helped her integrate into her new life and territory, but remains largely hands off, allowing Monique’s work to grow naturally. He’ll take any calls and aid with any questions, however.

Fortunately, Monique was able to access her unfinished and unpublished code from storage, so she wouldn’t have to start over on all of her projects. She was also able to transfer her cryptocurrency to a new account. While there was a certain amount of freedom in setting up whole new social media accounts and gamer tags, the newly-turned vampire is careful not to mirror her old self completely.

Monique keeps tabs on Amelia’s social media, but does not interact with her directly. If it’s found that she is not as dead as thought, Monique is not sure what her girlfriend or family would do. Though her six-floor walkup is a step down from the Smart Home condo she once shared with her lover, it’s not a bad place to live. She often helps her elderly neighbor, Gerta Schneider, with groceries or technical support.

Despite the changes and the divorce from everyone she knew, Monique enjoys her life as a vampire. She never cared for the daytime, anyway, and now she can create her apps without needing to worry about a day job. Some of the powers she’s gained are interesting and useful, too. A future planned project is to enhance her newfound abilities with tech. That’s going to require some research and time, but the undead have all the time in the world…
