I’m not dead yet!

It’s been a tumultuous few months. Work emergencies and a move have had an impact on all of my writing projects and game-time. But, now I’ve moved. I’ve helped my former roommate move. Things are now getting back on even footing.

I'm not dead yet! (Scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail)

The Call of Cthulhu: Down Darker Trails campaign “Bag of Nails” came to a satisfactory, yet heroic, end. The group started off strong gaming remotely when the pandemic first began, but without a set schedule, it became harder and harder for players to gather regularly. I learned two big lessons over the course of the game. 1. I’m too interested in the players being allowed to win to consider myself a “classic” CoC Keeper. 2. A set schedule may mean people miss a game, but then they miss on their terms instead of forgetting the game started. There’s less people wrangling involved if a game is always on Day X. I may eventually finish write-ups and posts for the games that occurred, but it’s a low priority.

My Pathfinder group continues to play mostly monthly, and I plan on returning to ViVi’s Journal with future sessions. I’m going to change the style a bit, though. Make it a little more in character and less blow-by-blow. I hope to capture the main plot points of the game, but focus on Verusha’s experience as the primal nature of her sorcery changes her personality. My problem with games like Pathfinder and D&D is so much of it is running from one fight to the next. Not all sessions or all the time, but there’s a strong combat focus in the published modules. Endless combat rarely makes for good storytelling and the prior journal entries just felt a bit dry on re-reads. I want my words (her words?) to be somewhat engaging and enjoyable even for those not in my Pathfinder group.

Where one campaign ends, another begins. Using Mongoose’s 2nd edition Traveller system, I’ll be running a new game titled “Strange Heavens” with my former Bag of Nails group. I’ll be including write-ups similar to the CoC posts I’d been running prior, but with a bit more brevity. Again, trying to avoid the blow-by-blow nature of past write-ups for both my own time/sanity and reading enjoyment.

I’m considering running a separate campaign, possibly based on Masks. I had a lot of ideas for the #SuperZeroes game that never came to be and I’d like to get some use out of Bearport if I can. But time will tell.

In non-gaming news, the webcomic archive on my site will eventually be returning, but will likely not use the WordPress theme. I used a little too much custom code for my comic system and plugging it into WordPress would require a little more work than I’d like. But I’ve been coming up with a workaround and hope to have the comics back by the end of September.

I’m back on Twitter. I missed the ttrpg posts and discourse that happens there. I still lurk more than I post, but feel free to follow me! @Attercap

Since late 2019 the site’s been on rocky waters and I don’t know if it’s smooth sailing from here on, but the storm clouds are fading. Thanks to those of you who have been sticking around.
