Fate Adversary: Blank Paige

A few years ago, I was working on a low-level superhero game. The campaign never properly launched, but there were a few adversaries I had planned, if never run. Blank Paige is a possible foe for a superhero, spy, or cyberpunk game.

Blank Paige

High Concept: Memory-Altering Assassin
Trouble: An Unknown Past
Other Aspects: Icy Beauty, Survival Over Contract, No Hesitation

Two years ago a new contract killer arrived on the scene. Not only was she an Olympic-class sniper, she was fast on her feet and skilled at casing a location. Just as useful and far more unusual were her powers. She could not be detected by cameras or similar surveillance equipment and she was able to remove the memories of those she met. With her talents the newcomer was able to make a name for herself amongst assassins. She goes by the pseudonym of Blank Paige.

Paige doesn’t really know much about her life before she was a hired gun. Though she has the skills and inclinations to be a hitman, her own memory is fragmented and hazy. Her own alias is not only a pun on her powers but a dark mirror of her own memory. It’s unlikely her given name is actually “Paige.”

Despite the blur of memories, Blank Paige is more focused on the jobs she can get. Unlike many contact killers, her survival comes first. Though it’s rare, she has broken a contract in order to stay alive and undetected. Anonymity is part of her survival strategy. Though she has performed multiple high-profile and political terminations law enforcement agencies have no record of her. And she wishes to keep it that way.

Skills

Superb: Shoot
Great: Burglary, Will
Good: Athletics, Fight, Notice

Powers

Memory Wipe: On touch and with a contest of Will you can wipe up to 2 hours of a target’s memory and leave them stunned for 5 minutes.
Invisible to Cameras: You do not show up on cameras or surveillance equipment. (This can create difficulties if such equipment is required to enter buildings.)

Stunts

Hardcore Parkour: +2 to overcome actions with Athletics if you are in a chase across rooftops or a similarly precarious environment.
Mental Blueprint: When casing a location, you receive a +2 on Burglary rolls to create an advantage.
Called Shot: During a Shoot attack, spend a fate point and declare a specific condition you want to inflict on a target, like Shot in the Hand. If you succeed, you place that as a situation aspect on them in addition to hitting them for stress.

Blank Paige Adventure Seeds

2 Wrights Made a Wrong

Andrew and Anthony Wright were twin brothers and accountants for the mob. Then they were caught and decided to turn state’s evidence to reduce their sentence. The local mob boss has put a contract on their lives before they can testify and Blank Paige has accepted the job.

The District Attorney doesn’t know for sure, but suspects the lives of the Wrights are in danger. They’ve asked the player characters to help protect the informants, but be discreet. While the shared knowledge of the two twins is preferable, so long as one is able to testify, that will do enough damage to the criminal organization. The brothers have been separated and each are in custody in hotels across town from each other.

As the PCs will initially be unaware of the assassin’s power, it’s very likely that one of the Wrights will die before they are able to piece together enough clues to protect the second brother from Blank Paige.

Backstory

This adventure seed assumes the player characters have previously encountered Blank Paige at least once. Blank Paige is back in town, but not for a contract. She believes she has a lead on her own history. Five years ago Mosaic Laboratories was performing experiments on a cure for Alzheimer’s. Though officially the scientific trials never went beyond rats, there is some evidence that Dr. Mia Recuerdo conducted human experimentation off the books. Two and a half years ago (about the time Blank Paige appeared) the scientist disappeared.

The contract killer is looking for Dr. Recuerdo’s notes or former partners; any information she can find to determine if those experiments could be linked to her own life. While Paige’s goal isn’t to kill anyone, it may be that a life or two is lost during her investigation or stories about memory failures are brought to the attention of the player characters, letting them know about the return of Blank Paige.

This adventure seed could germinate in multiple ways. The adventure could be as simple as stopping Paige once more. Or, in their investigation to determine what Paige is after they could stumble upon a dark secret: that Mosaic Labs was involved in human testing and Paige’s powers and memory loss were the result of that testing. GM’s may decide that Paige killed the scientist in her fight for freedom, or that Mosaic disposed of Mia Recuerdo to cover their tracks.

Once the mystery is solved, the PCs will then not only need to stop Paige but also decide if they share this information with her in the hopes it can help change her nature as a villain.
