In Nomine: Aemilius

Not all starting-level celestials for In Nomine need to be recently fledged or created. Aemilius is a centuries-old Seraph who accumulated power only to lose it. He can be used as a starting character or as an NPC in any In Nomine game.

Nearly a century ago, Aemilius had his Heart cracked and he became Outcast from Heaven. Once upon a time, the Seraph was a trusted Vassal of Judgment and held a Role as a judge. Living amongst humans and being put in a position of power began to, however subtly, corrupt him. He told little white lies to maintain a human life and would often sentence the defendants who stood before him with humiliating tasks (write the obituary of their living child, walk up and down a street with a billboard reading “I am unclean”, etc.). These humiliations were used to help drive lessons of guilt home, but were also contrary to the central ethics of Judgment: let the punishment fit the crime.

It started out as a mild buzzing by the Symphony in his ears, then Aemilius began to accumulate Dissonance, which became Discord, then Discords, which eventually shaded him from Heaven’s light. He became an Outcast. Fearing the reactions of his brethren and torment from the forces of Hell, Aemilius hid. Unfortunately for him, the Horde found him first. The Seraph had never been a fighter and he was no match for the demons who attacked him both corporeally and celestially. Aemilius had his Forces torn from him as he tried to defend himself and it was only “luck” that he was sent into Trauma beside his own splintered Heart before he was completely destroyed.

It took decades before Aemilius was able to redeem himself in Dominic’s eyes. His Distinction was stripped from him, as was all but one Discord. That final Discord was left as punishment for the humiliations he had served to others. This punishment fit the crime. Now, Aemilius is returning to the corporeal realm—this time Role-less—in order to complete his redemption and hopefully begin the return to his former status.

Aemilius has witnessed firsthand the dangers of hubris; it left him stripped of skills and Songs; it cast scorn and shame upon him and it nearly killed him. He praises God that it did not cause him to Fall and that he does have a chance to remind his fellow brethren of the dangers. His prior time on earth and his workings with humanity have helped him both recognize (if not fully understand) their idiosyncrasies and actions, and the Seraph has been able to use that understanding in his treatment toward angels.

The Most Holy now tends to fully scrutinize the actions and reasoning of those around him before passing Judgment or contacting his superiors to report any possible wrong-doings. His manner is as typically reserved as about any Seraph, but without pride or arrogance. Aemilius is neither standoffish or unfriendly, he simply saves his speech for when he has something to say. He’s the quiet friend where when he speaks, in his light voice, others tend to stop and listen.

Aemilius’s current vessel is that of a 5’9″ white male in his early 40’s with short, dark hair. He speaks softly, with a mild Scots burr. And, due to his remaining Discord, uses a dark wood cane to support his lame left leg. Typically, he wears a suit or other formal clothing.

  • 4: He maintains very few relationships. He keeps in touch with his Superior and has a handful of friends. About 14 relationships total.
  • 5: He views the relationship with his Superior to be of absolute importance. His friends are important and treasured.
