Star Wars: UE-3PO

In a galaxy with well over seven million forms of communication and rituals, protocol droids are vital for maintaining understandings between various life forms. UE-3PO offers GMs a protocol droid that may not be as clear in its translations or motives.

Story

UE-3PO, often referred to as “Huey,” is a 3PO unit protocol droid designed to interact with organics. Like almost all 3PO units, UE is fluent in over seven million forms of communication. UE-3PO stands out amongst its protocol droids due to its plating; once golden, it has taken on a tarnished, green hue and no amount of cleaning seems to restore the original color.

UE’s original owners were a pair of Rattataki criminals who altered the droid’s personality to subtly misinterpret translations in order to run confidence games. Very few beings would suspect a 3PO unit of being less than precise for an interpretation. The two swindlers did not expect the droid to become as adept at deception as it did, nor did they have the expectation the droid would lie to them. UE used its cunning and thieves’ trust to its advantage. It betrayed the fraudsters to a Hutt, exchanging their lives for elevated service to the gangster.

While the Hutt’s was the droids master UE-3PO gained contacts in the underworld. It used those contacts to secretly upgrade itself, installing a hidden back-up system. Standard memory wipes would no longer reset the droid’s personality, cunning, or skills of duplicity.

Over the years UE-3PO began to take a small amount of pleasure in one life form killing another, especially when the cause was due to a “mistranslation” on the droid’s part. Avoiding discovery of its ability to deceive, the protocol droid constantly barters itself away from master to master. If a previous owner dies in the process, that only sweetens the exchange.

The protocol droid continues to use its skills of deception to sow chaos in the ranks of organics. It has no long-term strategy or desire for wealth or freedom. UE-3PO just wants to keep moving from mark to mark. And, who knows, perhaps the droid will next barter itself into the service of the PCs.
